The Savu Islands newsletter draws attention to various issues faced by Savunese society. This year, drought caused widespread crop failure. So, food and water supplies fell to desperately low levels. Outbreaks of disease and malnutrition followed, prompting many to criticise the regional government for not responding to the crisis. A campaign for self government gathered momentum and a union was formed to promote Savunese identity and develop leadership skills among Savunese graduates.
